Das Volk ist dumm...

...und das Schweizervolk noch dümmer. So jedenfalls meine erste Reaktion nach Verkündung der SFDRS-Hochrechnungen.

In Massen sind sie heute aus ihren Häusern und Altersheimen geströmt (53,2% Stimmbeteiligung) und gingen an die Urne. Angespornt von einer SVP-Kampagne, die an Geschmacklosigkeit nicht leicht zu übertreffen war, sowie einer Panikwelle vor rasenden Ausländern - vor allem aber unbeeindruckt von einem Ja-Komitee, dem es wohl eher an Inspiration als an Geld fehlte (und damit meine ich keineswegs den zuständigen Bundesrat) - stimmte der Schweizer Souverän schlicht und einfach gegen die Ausländer.

Das Ja zur Mutterschaftsversicherung stellt heute, man (und frau) wird mir verzeihen, einen schwachen Trost dar. Die Schweiz hat mir, gerade rechtzeitig vor meiner Rückkehr nach London, wieder aufgezeigt, was wir "vom Ausland" alles noch lernen können - lernen müssen.

R.E.M. non-post

First things first: This is NOT a post.

Why? Because I was about to start telling you something about R.E.M. - and by God, I've talked about that band already. I posted something when the title of their new album was revealed; I posted something when a 30-second snippet of the first single from Around The Sun was made available; I posted something when the whole song was available; I posted something when I downloaded an R.E.M. gig via BT (in shitty quality, I might add).

And I could have posted more - for instance, when I bought two premium fanclub tickets (thanks to a fortunate error on remhq.com - I'm not even a fanclub member!) to their concert in Birmingham in February because the London show sold out in two minutes.

All that, and I'm not even that big of an R.E.M. fan! I just happen to think they're the best rock band in the world. But the fact that I have yet to write my first post on my all-time favourite artist surprises even me. Let's face it, in the last six weeks, I used my BT client to download about 15 GB of live material from him. And Musicology is still in heavy rotation on my iPod.

But I digress. The point of this non-post is: I won't post anything about R.E.M. until I review Around The Sun. Consequently, I can say with great pride that I won't post anything about www.myspace.com/rem, where you can listen to Around The Sun in its entirety, from beginning to end, including track 4, "Make It All Okay", which has got to be the most beautiful new song I've heard in years. But you're gonna have to find out about that on your own - Judge Jonathan isn't telling you!

De Hanf-Ueli

10vor10 bringt die Sensation: Ueli Maurer, Präsident der SVP, hat Hanfpflanzen im Garten!

Nun bekräftigt unser Ueli natürlich, diese Pflanzen seien lediglich 3-4 Wochen unbemerkt in seinem Garten gewesen. Und nun, da er über ihre Existenz aufgeklärt worden sei, habe er sie selbstverständlich vernichtet. Angepflanzt haben sie, so Maurer, gewisse Familienmitglieder (Ueli pocht da auf Respekt vor der Privatsphäre der Maurers).

Seltsam ist nur, warum Gelegenheitskiffer für Ueli plötzlich nicht mehr "Kleinkriminelle" sind, wenn es um die eigenen Kinder geht! Es bleibt abzuwarten, ob die SVP-Basis bei ihrem Präsi auch ein Auge zudrückt, was gesetzeswidrige Substanzen betrifft (sowie Ueli bei seinen hippen Kids).

Die Missen sagen JA

Wir haben also eine neue Miss Schweiz. Sie heisst Fiona Hefti, ist 24, kommt aus Zürich (für einmal nicht die Lachnummer der Schweiz) und sieht so aus:



Die diesjährige Miss Schweiz fällt also erneut dadurch auf, dass sie in der Masse der Schweizer Frauen eben nicht auffällt. Mit Wehmut erinnern wir uns an die Zeiten, als noch Frauen zur Miss gekürt wurden, die "etwas anders" waren - eben das gewisse Etwas hatten. Naja, eigentlich gab es da nur eine, und sie ist und bleibt für mich bis heute Miss Schweiz: Melanie Winiger.




Wie dem auch sei - bei der Miss Schweiz-Wahl geht es ja längst nicht nur um Schönheit. Besonders nicht im Abstimmungsmonat September! Denn obschon mit Fiona Hefti ein typisches Schweizermädchen gewählt wurde, standen ja noch andere zur Wahl.
Und siehe da: Den "Prix Amitié" für die bei den 16 Finalistinnen beliebteste Kandidatin erhielt eine gewisse Jasmina Sarajlic. Damit bewiesen die 16 Damen zwar einen fragwürdigen Sinn für Ästhetik, aber gleichzeitig auch politisches Fingerspitzengefühl. Wenn das kein Votum ist für 2xJA zu den Einbürgerungsvorlagen am 29. September!

How many?

Remember the Fugees song "How Many Mics" (from their 1996 masterpiece The Score)? I never really knew what they were saying in that chorus, but since it's always better to sing along, I just kind of made up something that sounded right to me:

"How many mics do we rip on the daily
Say me say many money, say me say many many many"

The other day, out of curiosity and boredom, I decided to find out what they were actually saying in that chorus. So I googled up the lyrics (my iPod is in a Fugees kind of mood these days, by the way). Get ready for a big shocker. The correct lyrics are:

Now I do feel proud that I got the lyrics right from the start, but I'm still a bit confused. I mean, how many mics do they rip on the daily??

iShuffle Conspiracy

Think your iPod is completely neutral in its 'Shuffle' mode? Think again.

I've always felt that my iPod has favourite songs. Somehow, every time I listened to my (4000+) songs on shuffle mode, Prince's "Little Red Corvette" was among the first ten tracks to be played. Now the New York Times has confirmed my dark suspicion - my iPod likes some songs more than others (although Apple continues to deny it).

Here's the article that reveals the scary truth, and more: You will learn to hate the songs your iPod loves (because they keep coming up!). Read this:

Dan Cedarholm, a Web designer in Salem, Mass., insists that his iPod has a predilection for the indie punk band Fugazi. Even though he only has two of the band's albums stored on his "vintage" 5-gigabyte device, the band seems to dominate his iPod to a degree wildly disproportionate to the amount of space it occupies on his player's memory, he said.

"It is truly bizarre," said Mr. Cedarholm, who no longer likes Fugazi. "Before, it was this hidden gem, and when I heard them I would be like, 'Oh yeah. Fugazi. Cool.' "

Now he hits the Fast Forward button.

Mr. Cedarholm has contemplated removing all Fugazi songs from his iPod, but he said he fears that "the baton will get passed" to some other band, like his beloved Pixies, "and God help me if I wind up hating them too."

You mean I'll end up hitting the 'next' button on "Little Red Corvette"?! God help me!

Von Couchepin, Schulkindern und der Weltwoche

Ich kann es nicht lassen, ich muss wieder positiv über einen Bundesrat sprechen. Heute an der Reihe: Pascal Couchepin.

Warum? Weil er, wie mir die tobisternsche Anti-Zeitung mitteilt, sich für die (in der Schweiz längst überfällige) frühere Einschulung von Kindern ausspricht. Da hat einer wohl das hier gelesen - einer jener (immer seltener werdenden) Weltwoche-Artikeln, die den Nagel ganz einfach auf den Kopf treffen.
